Stage 1
Choose the route that fits citizenship, work and income before a contract or fee.

EU movers: registration, not D8. Local hires: check the employer and work-permission sequence.
Start this stage →Stage 3
Prepare traceable transfers, interim cover and arrival cash.

Banking, healthcare, housing documents and licence recognition.
Start this stage →Stage 5
Register, file and pay; keep origin-country deadlines alongside these.

Review residence continuity, obligations and your exit cash before renewing commitments.
Start this stage →Choose the right permission
Entry permission, residence and work rights can be separate. Compare the route first, then price each cost component.
Government charges below are tied to the named authority / application. Medical, translations and insurance need individual quotes; no universal all-in price is implied. AIMA current fee schedule · MNE consular charges
| Line item | Confirmed charge or quote needed |
|---|---|
| Consular / government application | No D8 consular fee; ask the municipal CRUE service for its current charge. |
| Residence card / biometrics / work permission | CRUE is not the same as a non-EU AIMA residence card. |
| Medical / health cover | No general consular medical-exam assumption; coverage / entitlement remains separate. |
| Translation / apostille / attestation | Identity and residence-basis evidence; ask the municipality for its checklist. |
| Line item | Confirmed charge or quote needed |
|---|---|
| Consular / government application | Ask the issuing consulate for its current national-visa charge and any outsourced appointment fee. Do not reuse an old EUR 90 total. |
| Residence card / biometrics / work permission | Use AIMA’s current fee schedule for the exact permit and submission channel. |
| Medical / health cover | Check the consular medical / insurance list; required insurance is a recurring cost, not the card fee. |
| Translation / apostille / attestation | Foreign contract / client and recent income, accommodation and records; quote translations / apostilles per document. |
| Line item | Confirmed charge or quote needed |
|---|---|
| Consular / government application | Current consular fee, appointment-provider fee and courier charge separately. |
| Residence card / biometrics / work permission | AIMA permit / issuance row; family applications separately. |
| Medical / health cover | Required insurance / certificates and later public-entitlement setup are different items. |
| Translation / apostille / attestation | Pension / rental / investment, accommodation and police / family evidence as specified. |
| Line item | Confirmed charge or quote needed |
|---|---|
| Consular / government application | Consular application and any business-setup fees itemised separately. |
| Residence card / biometrics / work permission | AIMA permit fees for the actual application. |
| Medical / health cover | Check required cover and employer / social-system start dates. |
| Translation / apostille / attestation | Contract / business evidence, qualifications and required certified records. |
Get the order right before paying for a long lease or relying on a tax break.
Match your actual work or passive income to a route. Budget ordinary tax unless an adviser confirms that you meet IFICI conditions.
Understand D8 and tax planningAllow for temporary housing, advance rent, security and setup. View the building for damp, heating and insulation before taking a long lease.
Build your arrival fundNIF registration, tax notifications and bank opening are separate jobs. Ask what can happen remotely and what requires your presence.

Residence permission and Portuguese tax treatment are separate.

What to check →Banking sequenceNIF first, then bank checksTax notifications, representation and account opening are different steps.
What to check →Work & coverageConfirm local dutiesResolve payroll and social-security obligations, not just the visa.
What to check →First model Portuguese residence under ordinary tax rules. Then treat IFICI as an upside case only after the profession, employer or entity, qualifications, prior-residence history and application route have been checked against the current law.
2026 rule check: the remote-work residence income test is commonly expressed as four times the national minimum wage. Portugal’s 2026 minimum is €920, making the reference €3,680 per month; confirm the current consular document list and calculation at filing. IFICI can apply a 20% special rate to qualifying Portuguese-source employment or self-employment income, but only where the person, activity and entity tests are met.
Crypto is not a one-line exemption: Article 10 of the Portuguese IRS Code excludes qualifying gains and losses on certain cryptoassets held for at least 365 days, but it also contains asset, counterparty-jurisdiction and departure rules. Shorter-held disposals, staking or other crypto remuneration, professional activity and a move out of Portugal can follow different provisions. Preserve acquisition dates, wallet and exchange records, euro values and the tax residence of relevant service providers.

Every starting amount is in EUR, including obligations at home after conversion. These are editable samples, not local market averages. Changing the currency label does not convert the inputs.
The landing calculation separates money needed before and soon after arrival from ordinary monthly affordability. The calculation adds your upfront travel, housing and setup costs to core monthly spending multiplied by your chosen reserve months. Include any extra emergency buffer directly in the setup input. Setup can include temporary accommodation, travel, document processing, lease deposits, agency fees and utility activation. A result is the amount to prepare under those assumptions, not a legal minimum balance for a visa or a bank account.
Record whether each payment is refundable, a credit against a later bill or a permanent expense. A refundable security deposit still ties up cash when you need it. Annual rent paid in advance should not also be treated as twelve additional rent payments in the same first-year total. Count the next unpaid period rather than adding two versions of the same expense. When payroll, reimbursements or a property sale are uncertain, keep them out of cash available on day one.
Dubai utility deposits and tenancy registration differ from Abu Dhabi or other destinations. DEWA lists apartment and villa deposits separately, with activation charges on top. Agent commissions and lease deposits require transaction-specific quotes; a familiar percentage is not a universal law. For a family, use the school’s payment dates and coverage start dates. Keep an emergency reserve accessible separately from any blocked visa funds, then ask whether a delayed bank opening would prevent you paying the landlord.
Replace the sample amounts with written quotes before you sign. An annual charge should be divided by twelve only when you are testing a monthly budget; it may still have to be paid upfront. Separate refundable deposits from expenses, and do not count a deposit as cash you can immediately spend again. Keep every input in the currency stated beside the tool. A currency selector that changes a label does not convert an existing number.
The calculation runs locally in your browser. It cannot approve a visa, verify a payslip, promise bank acceptance or establish tax residence. Government references explain the applicable rule, while rent, insurance, lender margins and provider charges need their own dated quotes. Run an ordinary-treatment or higher-cost fallback as well as your preferred case. If the move only works under an unconfirmed exemption or a bonus that has not been paid, resolve that uncertainty before committing.
